ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Warrior-Scholar Project (WSP) provides intensive, immersive, one and two-week college-preparatory academic boot camps at America?s top universities to members currently serving in the military and veterans. These academic boot camps are offered at no cost. During programming, Warrior-Scholars are mentored by highly successful student-veterans who have transitioned from the military to college. Host institution faculty volunteer their time, and curricula are humanities, STEM, or business focused. Through faculty facilitated lectures, study skills workshops, writing assignments, problem sets, and tutoring, Warrior-Scholars acquire the skills to succeed in higher education and navigate the cultural shift from active duty military service to academia.
Each WSP Mobile Training Team (MTT) consists of 2 to 4 successful student-veterans who are alumni of the WSP program. These fellows are employed for the duration of the summer to help execute the week- WSP programs. Fellows? primary responsibilities vary depending on which type of team they are assigned to, but all WSP Fellows are responsible for teaching effective study habits, tutoring & mentoring program participants, as well as coordinating program implementation with WSP staff, campus faculty, and campus administrative staff in order to ensure that WSP programs are run according to established standards.
Please note that this position is open to WSP alumni only. This is a full-time seasonal position. WSP Fellows are expected to work from May 15-August 15, 2022. Study and have a strong understanding of the WSP subject-specific course curriculum in advance of the first program event. MTT Fellow Training will take place from May 29 ? June 3, 2022.
Use Google Drive to coordinate and share info with all WSP staff members and university administrators; update and maintain Google Sheets and Google Docs
Set up personal travel arrangements with travel agency
Assist with pre-course coordination as needed, set up course websites and prepare shared electronic documents, inventory and assemble course materials, and attend pre-course calls/meetings and
Administer the WSP course, adapting as necessary (in coordination with other WSP staff) based on participant needs and course developments
Mentor and support participants throughout the program and lead discussions on transitional topics for student veterans, tailoring discussion to meet the needs of participants
Attend evening study sessions and provide one-on-one tutoring when needed
Conduct student evaluation sessions and track the progress and development of participants
Administer pre- and post-course surveys, manage participant check-in and check-out procedures
Communicate program details to participants and MTT members and communicate program updates to other WSP staff as necessary
Attend and document daily lectures, workshops, speaker events, etc. and facilitate end-of-course reception, if required, Perform other related duties as assigned
Invite program participants to WSP Alumni?s private social media pages as soon as the program ends
Identify and document participants interested in becoming Alumni Ambassadors
Collect and upload all relevant documentation to the WSP Google Drive
Create and submit personal expense reports
Complete MTT post-course assessments & survey
Archive submitted student assignments
DESIRED EXPERIENCE & BACKGROUND
Must be an alumnus/alumna of WSP and have at least one semester (or equivalent if on quarters or trimesters) of experience enrolled in a 4-year college
Demonstrated knowledge of, and belief in, the WSP curriculum, mission, and objectives and passionate about expanding educational opportunities for veterans; experience with and sensitivity to the difficulty of transitioning from the military to college
Perseverance in the face of challenges, ability to adapt to challenging environments, and a strong desire to do whatever it takes to improve and develop and respect for individuals’ diverse experiences and the ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds
All WSP Fellows are assigned to either a Humanities (HUM), STEM, or Business & Entrepreneurship (BUS) team. While most required qualifications and desired competencies for these three teams are identical, there exist curriculum-specific provisions to be assigned to a given team. These provisions are listed at the end of this document. General competencies sought in WSP Fellows are as follows:
Strong leadership, mentorship abilities, public speaking skills, and a willingness to lead academic study groups or instruction
Strong critical thinking skills, organizational ability, and interpersonal skills
Strong academic performer (transcript will be requested) or marked improvement in academic performance (Experience tutoring recommended)
Must be team-oriented and with a focus on the success of the entire MTT and its mission
Fellows must be available May 15-August 15, 2022 (when WSP courses run).
Each fellow will attend 4-5, 1-week courses and travel to each location. Fellows should expect to spend the time between courses accomplishing post-course tasks for previous courses and pre-course tasks for upcoming courses.
During the program, Fellows must stay on campus and be available from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM (working hours during each course day will vary and regular breaks will be provided). Due to the nature of the program, additional unforeseeable tasks may arise that could affect the approximate time commitment outlined.
All Fellows must be available for mandatory training which will take place in Connecticut (travel and lodging provided by WSP) from May 29? June 3, 2022. (Summer classes or other employment that may conflict with your duties are not allowed unless approved by WSP management.)
DESIRED COMPETENCIES ? TEAM SPECIALIZATIONS
All WSP Fellows should have a strong interest in the subject matter they are teaching. Additional desired competencies are as follows:
Must have passed or placed out of a freshman composition or similar course
Experience tutoring in a humanities-related subject recommended
Humanities major strongly preferred
Evidence of a strong mathematics and physics background related to the STEM curriculum, particularly in trigonometry and introductory mechanics
Must be comfortable tutoring or collaborating with other students on STEM-related coursework
Calculus and calculus-based physics coursework preferred, but not required
Business & Entrepreneurship:
Evidence of a strong background in a business-related subject
Experience tutoring recommended
Must have passed or placed out of a freshman composition or similar course
