Under direct supervision, receives firearm cases and cases from other sections, enters evidence and administrative data into computer system. Provides assistance in the preparation of reagents and equipment used by the firearms and other sections in casework, and the cleaning and performance checks of specialized instruments. Performs evidence handling processes associated with physical evidence such as receiving, storing, distribution, collection, and returning of evidence to law enforcement agencies; provides testimony in criminal trials.
40% 1. Performs assigned duties involving the receiving of firearm evidence and evidence from other sections in criminal cases from law enforcement agencies; prepares and reviews chain of custody administrative records establishes appropriate case numbers and files; receives and stores evidence in laboratory evidence vaults; returns evidence to submitting agencies directly or by mail. Follows laboratory protocols and enters appropriate data into case tracking computer system. Testifies in court as required concerning evidence handling procedures.
20% 2. As directed by forensic scientists, assists laboratory staff in cleaning of analytical instruments, related case processing equipment and technical work areas; performs selected performance checks on various analytical instruments, maintains charts and records in an inspection ready status; prepares reagents used in the analysis of physical evidence.
10% 3. As directed by forensic scientists, performs preliminary screening of firearms evidence; maintains and assists with the annual audit of the firearm reference collection.
10% 4. Develops good rapport with user agencies; ensures a smooth transfer of physical evidence and information to and from the forensic science laboratory; responds to inquiries from the user agencies concerning the submission and return of physical evidence and the status of cases.
15% 5. Prepares materials for presentation in court proceedings; maintains case files as appropriate for the establishment of chain of custody information; preserves the integrity of examinations performed; prepares physical evidence for transmitting to other forensic science laboratories; ensures proper transportation results; assists in instructing law enforcement agencies in the proper procedures for submission of physical evidence; testifies in court.
5% 6. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of two (2) years of college, preferably in one of the physical/biological sciences, supplemented with one (1) year of experience in related evidence and/or sample tracking processes;

2. Requires the completion of three (3) years of college, preferably in one of the physical/biological sciences.
Work Hours: Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
