Northrop Grumman is looking for a Manager of Media & Public Relations to support the company’s Space Systems sector. You’ll join a team of dedicated professionals who are shaping the stories about how our employees are pioneering the future and reimagining technologies in space.
The location for this position is flexible as long as you are located near a major Northrop Grumman Space Systems facility in order to satisfy onsite requirements from time to time, at the discretion of the reporting director and needs of the business. (Major locations include: Dulles, VA, Baltimore, MD, Chandler, AZ, Huntsville, AL, Roy, UT, Colorado Springs, CO, Redondo Beach, CA, San Diego, CA).
The Media Relations Manager is responsible for ensuring all Space Systems sector media engagements align and support the company’s overall media strategy, reflecting priorities at both the business and company level. As part of that responsibility, the Manager supports business communicators to identity the most impactful and strategic opportunities are aligned to the company’s media engagement strategy, including opportunities to promote important milestones, enhance customer engagement events, and more. In this position, you work in constant collaboration with other communicators across the company to help inform the strategy and approach to your media and public relations communications on behalf of Space Systems sector.
The Media Relations Manager is also responsible for ensuring company spokespeople are prepared for media events and all logistics are secured in addition to engaging with reporters and public affairs officers, when necessary, and ensuring those engagements are properly tracked and shared. In this role, you will also lead the media monitoring requirements associated with the business and enterprise priorities for which the Space Systems sector is aligned. In addition, you play a critical role in overseeing the enterprise public release process for the sector and supervise the work of the Public Release Coordinator.

How you will make a difference:
Lead an external earned media portfolio designed to elevate company thought leadership on priority technology focus areas that support an enterprise narrative focused on innovation
Partner with communications colleagues across the Space Systems sector to develop a strategic approach to media relations, including proactive and reactive media interviews, pitches, events, news products, digital presence, and more
Work in partnership with communicators across the sector to prepare and position company-wide subject matter experts for thought leadership opportunities across earned channels as well as proper public release of related materials and maintain coordination and collaboration with the Brand team on a steady social presence/narrative to promote the business priorities
Ensure development of effective media messaging and materials: pitches, press releases, media training and briefings
Support crisis communications and related responses to queries for the sector
Stay informed on industry news and flag issues and trends for leaders
Lead, mentor and develop media and public relations professionals across the company
Skills for success:
Experience developing and executing strategic media relations plans to achieve business objectives and advance thought leadership
An ability to identify and leverage news cycles to advance company thought leadership in priority focus areas; execute press events from conference calls to media interviews, site visits and other press events and support internal media training, messaging sessions and external media engagements
Effective AP writing and editing skills, with an ability to draft all types of news content from news releases and news features to long form articles for placement on owned channels
An ability to confidently and independently interact with executive leadership
Comfort with change in a fast-paced, empowered work environment with strong collaboration and alignment to company priorities
Strategic thinking, planning and decision-making
High level of attention to detail and creativity
A commitment to quality work and accountability for results
Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 10 years of media relations, communications, public relations or public affairs for a medium- to large-sized organization or Master’s degree and minimum of 8 years of media relations, communications, public relations or public affairs for a medium- to large-sized organization
Experience leading people
Demonstrated knowledge in the developing, deploying and activating media & communication campaigns with measurable business impact
Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Ability to travel up to 25% of the time; travel includes intra-office within the DC metro area, as well as other sites, in support of the business as needed
Demonstrated success understanding and navigating complex, global organizations
Track record of delivering measurable media coverage and demonstrated strong relationships with PR agency and media agency partners
Experience developing productive relationships with executives
Experience in technology, aerospace, defense or other science-related business or government field
Sound judgement in decision making and leadership actions with capabilities to drive change through creative and/or other disruptive methods, ideas and approaches
Experience with CISION Media Monitoring & Measurement and MuckRack reporter database tools
Familiarity with and/or existing relationships with key journalists in across aerospace and defense media
Salary Range: $124,700.00 – $187,100.00
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay . Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
