Automation Programmer – Engineering Technician

You will define, design, bringing to market, and supporting NICOR’s solid-state lighting (SSL) automation product lines.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Automation Programmer:

• Lead NICOR SSL Customer focused automation program development and standardization initiatives as they relate to lighting design and controls. Working closely with Engineering, Marketing, and Sales Teams.
• Ensure product design integrity by reviewing designs, recommending actions, providing solutions to the most technical challenges, and providing overall electrical technical leadership.
• Specific responsibility for creating system architecture, combining lighting, controls, and services.
• Work with Management, Marketing, and Sales Teams to define new product requirements and map the requirements into technical performance specifications.
• Validate designs through design reviews, product testing, certification and documented detailed analysis for product launch.
• Define, organize, and maintain NICOR Server file structure of SSL specifications, CAD files, design documents and revisions, bills of materials (BOMs), etc.
• Evaluate new technologies that will improve product performance and reduce development time and costs.

Requirements of the Automation Programmer (Engineering Technician):

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering – Preferred but not required or Equivalent Specialized Degree/Experience
• Minimum 2+ Years’ Experience within Engineering Field
• Experience with Phoenix Contact PLC or similar PLC controllers programing to ILC 61131-3 and other system controls
• Experience with BLE MESH, Wi-Fi, Ethernet IP based system architecture
• Strong lighting controls experience with DALI protocols and BACnet a plus
• Understanding/knowledge of lighting basics, solid state lighting, LED arrays and basic PCB design and troubleshooting a plus

Knowledge, skills, and abilities of the Automation Programmer:

• Proficient with computer-aided design software applications such as AutoCAD, Pro/ENGINEER, and SolidWorks.
• Theory-of-operation knowledge and understanding of; LED’s, electrical power supply and drive circuitry, heat sink thermodynamics, optics, and general knowledge of Solid-State Lighting components.
• Experience with IoT solutions and controls a plus
• Knowledge of UL and IEC standards
• Experience specifying and troubleshooting plug-n-play low-voltage and line-voltage wiring systems a plus
• General hands-on proficiency with computers, electronic test instruments, lab and shop tools related to automation system programming, commissioning, and testing.
• Proven project management skills and experience as related to developing and delivering new lighting automation products to market on time and within budget.
• Ability to manage and interface with a wide variety of component suppliers, technology vendors, contract manufacturers, design service providers, etc.
• Experience working with international cross-functional teams.
• Strong written and oral presentation skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint)
• Ability to prioritize business needs.
• Team player, strong collaboration skills.
• Attention to detail. An ability to prioritize, work within deadlines, handle multiple projects, and maintain objectives.
• Must work well with or without supervision, motivated and a team player.

Working Conditions:

• In a typical interior/warehouse/office environment: work performed in an Office setting is largely a sedentary role, must be able to sit for long durations of time; warehouse environment with exposure to extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, and fumes.
• May require standing or walking for more than 4 hours per day.
• Shop work building, modifying, and testing SSL prototypes using hand tools.
• Laboratory work using electrical and mechanical test equipment.
• Able to lift 40lbs.
• Limited travel to various service/component suppliers’ meetings or industry conferences and trade shows.

Equipment used by the Electrical Engineer:

• Electrical and lighting test equipment.
• Hand tools and power tools for prototype building and modifications.
• Computer, phone, copier, fax machine, scanner, and standard office equipment

Pay: $58,624.00 – $69,000.00 per year
