Must Have:

• Certified Coding Specialist or RHIT (Registered Health Information Technologist) Cert- NO CPC

• Experience in coding in a facility of significant size and complexity, hospital business operations, information systems, and coding applications

• 2 years of experience performing acute care inpatient, outpatient, and/or emergency department coding

• Experience participating in Coding standards, processes, policies, procedures, and service level agreements

Plus:

• Experience in regional/ shared service environment with multiple/ matrix reporting relationships.

Knowledge of:

• Knowledge of hospital inpatient, outpatient, and/or emergency department coding rules, Ambulatory Payment Classifications and Diagnosis Related Group assignment logic, National Correct Coding Initiative edits, Coding Clinic and Current Procedural Terminology Assistant coding guidelines

• Knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, patient health record content and the medical record coding process

• Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology

• Familiarity with billing functions and the components of a charge description master

• General knowledge of Revenue Cycle applications, including Electronic Health Record systems

• Knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques related to compliant healthcare billing/collections

• Familiarity with Coding management functions in acute and non-acute settings

• Knowledge of Patient Management information system applications, preferably EPIC Skills

• Ability to run reports needed to improve patient care

• Computer keyboarding skills and experience with computerized coding/abstracting systems and encoders

• Ability to use spreadsheet, word processing, statistical, project management, and presentation software applications, preferably Microsoft Suite

Day to Day:

Assigns codes and modifiers into the hospital encoder system within established Health Information Management standards. Abstracts and codes Acute Outpatient and Emergency Department Coding encounters as assigned based on functional expertise. Determines principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures for Acute Outpatient & and Emergency Department Coding records, regardless of complexity, according to all applicable coding rules and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities include:

• Correctly determines principal and secondary diagnoses and procedures for Acute Outpatient & Emergency Department Coding records, according to all applicable coding rules and regulatory standards

• Accurately assigns codes and modifiers into the hospital encoder system within established Health Information Management standards

• Coordinates with others as needed to ensure comprehensive and timely completion of coding for claims processing purposes

• Accurately abstracts hospital service records within Health Information Management standards and regulatory requirements.

• Seeks clarification or additional records regarding services rendered or procedures performed as needed to support accurate and comprehensive billing and reimbursement for each individualized record

• Correctly assigns ICD-9-CM (or ICD-10-CM as required) and CPT-4 codes and modifiers for all hospital-based outpatient encounters, including ancillary, emergency department, ambulatory surgery, and recurring accounts

• Codes and abstracts at least the minimum number of records per hour in accordance with established productivity and quality standards

• Aids the hospital billing office or other departments as required when problems or questions arise regarding coding issues

• Corrects data as requested in response to edits received from Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development or other data users

• Assists in orientation and appropriate training of team members, helps cross-train peers in minor responsibilities, acts as a mentor to peers Relationship Management

• Maintains positive working relationships with members of other teams in the Shared Services Organization to communicate effectively and to ensure compliance with cross-team response

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $35.00 – $40.00 per hour
