Automation Engineer Responsibilities:

• Visit plant locations, learn and understand the production processes; identify and document automation opportunities
• Assess the financial and efficiency impacts of these opportunities and design solutions in collaboration with key stakeholders in operations and technology teams.
• Create proof of concept solutions that can be demonstrated and tested to drive efficiency, worker safety and financial returns leveraging technologies such as Robotics, computer vision, and other industrial automation and software technologies.
• Work with Mechanical, Electrical, and Software engineers to develop the details of the automation solution that you are creating.
• Design, validate, and execute appropriate test methods to address system design and performance issues.
• Facilitate complex problem-solving skills, enhance collaboration across functional groups, and support development efforts for current manufacturing hardware and new system development.
• The position entails rigorous process discipline and documentation practices as well as excellent cross-functional communication skills to assure functionality, safety, reliability and quality of the product.
• Develop robotics, computer vision, Material Handling devises, transfer conveyors or motion control software related to custom automation solution development.
• Designing and developing control algorithms that use sensors and other feedback mechanisms to regulate equipment operation
• Developing and designing new automation technologies and processes to improve efficiency
• Working with manufacturers to create prototypes for new products and processes
• Developing safety standards for new equipment and processes
• Designing and building computerized control systems for manufacturing processes, such as assembly lines and Molding Cells.
• Testing new equipment designs or process changes to ensure they meet safety standards and specifications
• Overseeing the installation of new automated equipment or processes to ensure proper function and lead the decommission of the new lines or equipment.
• Designing control systems for industrial machines and equipment, such as robots or manufacturing systems Creating operational manuals for use with new equipment or processes

Automation Engineer Skills:

• Excellent computer skills – particularly in programming and software development. Many aspects of the role of an Automation Engineer require the use of a computer. PLC, Vision System, Data Bases.
• Equipment troubleshooting skills – as you will often need to debug or troubleshoot an existing system
• Communication skills – will need to be able to explain novel and complex ideas to stakeholders of all levels and within multidisciplinary teams. Written communication skills will also be needed for record keeping and documentation, a key part of these regulated industries
• Problem-solving and creative thinking – will be required to troubleshoot problems as they arise and find effective solutions
• Organizational skills – to map out projects, prioritize workload and keep accurate documentation
• Flexibility & Adaptability – has to be able to keep up with latest techniques and technologies as they develop

Automation Engineer Requirements:

• Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree or education
• 5 to 7 years of direct related experience in application of robotics and automation in manufacturing / production environments OR 5 to 7 years of direct experience in engineering and development of robotics and automation solutions
• A passion for modern technology, a true desire to leverage the most advanced technologies available to improve worker safety, operational efficiency, and financial impacts
• Understanding and knowledge of Metal, New Equipment processes and solutions is desired
• Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification or higher is desired
• Excellent communication, presentation and demonstration skills with the ability to interface directly with executive level leadership
• Ability to act as a single threaded leader on complex projects while still contributing to concurrent running projects, focusing on multiple value streams and technology types.
• This position may require up to 75% of travel
