Salary: $55,000-$65,000/year or $26.51-$31.32/hour based on POST Certified Law Enforcement Experience

Purpose of Job

Under limited supervision, patrols assigned zone while exercising responsibility for the enforcement of state and local laws relating to public safety and welfare. Controls traffic, prevents crime or disturbances of the peace, and arrests violators. While working under often stressful, high-risk conditions, applies good independent judgment when dealing with dangerous or unusual situations and implements safe practices and procedures. Reports to the Patrol Sergeant and Lieutenant.

Essential Job Duties

A. Performs policing duties

• Patrols an assigned zone in a patrol car, bicycle, or on foot, to observe assigned area for possible criminal activity or other conditions that could endanger public safety; investigates complaints and enforces laws; maintains high visibility.
• Responds to requests for assistance by, or complaints from, the public via the dispatcher.
• Identifies, investigates, and reports vehicle crashes, dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions to the appropriate departments or agencies.
• Investigates crimes, interviews witnesses, complainants, and victims; gathers physical evidence and preserves such evidence for court use; conducts follow up investigations if necessary.
• Apprehends, arrests, and detains criminal suspects and law violators when necessary; follows proper procedures when making arrests to ensure the safety of arresting officers the public, and the suspect.
• Enforces all applicable laws of the State of Tennessee and the City of Franklin; notes suspicious persons and establishments and reports to supervisor.
• Maintains responsibility for the upkeep of patrol vehicle and any related equipment that is the property of the City of Franklin.
• Assumes control at traffic accidents to maintain smooth traffic flow, assists traffic accident victims, and investigates causes of accidents.
• Completes paperwork related to policing duties.

B. Public service

• Organizes community involvement in crime prevention efforts, collects data within assigned patrol areas; prepares crime related reports and statistics, as requested.

Other Job Duties

Performs other job duties as assigned, including:

• Provides backup and security for Fire Department/EMS personnel when needed, keeping bystanders out of danger, safeguarding property, and rendering first aid in emergencies.
• Maintains weapons and equipment in functional and presentable conditions.
• Attends required periodic training sessions and seminars.
• Performs special projects as directed.

Has thorough knowledge of the policies, procedure, and activities of the City and law enforcement practices as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Police Officer. Has thorough knowledge of law enforcement and standard police practices as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities. Has thorough knowledge of current criminal and civil law including laws of arrest, rules of evidence, and courtroom procedures and laws governing jail procedures and facilities. Has thorough knowledge regarding modern criminal investigation techniques, principles and methods and how they relate to law enforcement and police work. Knows how to keep abreast of any changes in policy, methods, computer operations, equipment needs, etc. as they pertain to departmental operations and activities. Is able to effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, and all other groups involved in the activities of the department. Is able to use independent judgment as situations warrant. Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology, principles, and methods utilized within the department.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

Education and Experience: The required knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties are normally acquired through attainment of an Associate’s degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Certifications/Licenses:

• At least twenty-one years of age
• Licensed and qualified to operate a firearm
• Valid Tennessee driver’s license
• Valid POST Certification
