Crew Member
Job Summary:
The Crew Member , works under the direction of the Distribution Management in accordance with the District’s policies and procedures and all applicable state and federal regulations. The position’s primary responsibilities include installing, maintaining, and repairing water supply systems, including hydrants and service connections. The Crew Member assists in ensuring the District’s mission to provide the highest quality of water and customer service at the lowest reasonable cost.
Duties/Responsibilities
· Hydrant maintenance.
· Operate hand and power tools.
· Transportation of materials and tools.
· Properly store and maintain tools and equipment.
· General maintenance and landscaping including mowing, weed whacking, raking, shoveling, sweeping, painting, mulching, pruning, weeding, and chainsaw operation.
· Operate motor vehicles.
· Operate rubber-tire and track equipment as needed.
· Operate compressors, jackhammers, pavement cutters and other related equipment.
· Install and maintain various sizes and types of water main and service line systems, including ductile iron, cast iron, polyethylene, PVC, transite, copper, brass, various compression fittings, clamps, coupling, valves, hydrants, and gate boxes.
· Assist with placing systems into service and conducting pressure tests of installed systems
· Assists with chlorinating, flushing, and collecting water samples from new water main installations.
· Performs on-call coverage on a rotating schedule as part of the standby crew to respond to and service emergency calls for water supply services.
· Maintains current knowledge and operates under District policies and programs.
· Comply with all mandatory safety, fire protection, housekeeping requirements, and established work practices. Wears and employs all required safety equipment and devices.
· Identify and report potential safety hazards and defective equipment and materials to immediate supervisor; correct safety hazards if directed to do so.
· Performs other duties and functions as assigned or directed.

· Interest in water supply, transmission, distribution system installation, and maintenance.
· Knowledge of safety practices, and procedures related to the construction, maintenance, and repair work of water systems.
· Ability to operate all departmental equipment and vehicles.
· Knowledge of confined space safety requirements.
· Proficient computer skills and the ability to learn new software.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
· Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
· Excellent organizational, prioritization, attention-to-detail, and time management skills.
Education and Experience
· One (1) year experience in construction and maintenance.
· High school diploma or GED.
· Valid State of Maine driver’s license required; minimum Class B license required, with Class A license preferred.
· Clean driving record preferred.
· Class II Water Distribution License
Physical Requirements
· Frequent and extended periods of year-round outside work, subject to extreme weather conditions.
· Frequent and extended periods of walking, standing, climbing, crawling, crouching, lifting and carrying.
· Exposure to loud noises and high vibrations.
· Frequent and extended periods of moderate physical exertion that requires appropriate body mechanics and techniques.
· Frequent and extended periods on and around public road and vehicular traffic.
· Must be comfortable working from heights, ladders, and in confined spaces.
· Must be able to lift up to 80 (eighty) pounds at times.
