Position Summary
The Engineering Associate in Communications & Infrastructure Engineering identifies and fulfills Communication Systems & Infrastructure Engineering needs while providing the following functions: Project Schedule Management; Budget Management; Analysis of Communications Infrastructure needs; Design of Communications Infrastructure; Management of Contract Labor Forces; provide subject matter expertise in radio systems, fiber optic, towers, telephony, construction, protective relay, ancillary communications system components and general utility engineering practices.

Tasks and Responsibilities
- Developing ongoing vision and strategy for communications systems at CPS Energy.
- Determining strategy and architecture for future deployments of communication systems.
- Management of multiple communication projects and coordination of various project stakeholders.
- Perform continuous reviews of existing communication infrastructure for capacity, performance, product, protection, and technology updates and improvements.
- Develop and maintain project schedules, timelines, allocation of resources, budgets, costs to complete project work.
- Develop projections of future budget needs in both Operation and Maintenance expenditures and Capital Investments
- Develop and prepare specifications for purchase orders for materials, equipment and construction services. Work closely with purchasing throughout the bidding, analysis, and award phases of the purchasing process. Evaluate bids for technical completeness, cost and other factors as required.
- Manage the use of contract services, prepare construction job packages, evaluate work for completeness and technical accuracy, evaluate billing, provide technical advice as required.
- Management of external contractors for the installation and repair of communications infrastructure.
- Oversee preventative maintenance inspections and modifications of communications infrastructure.
- Ensure all safety procedures and guidelines are being followed in/outside Substations during construction and modifications of communications infrastructures.
- Develops and maintains strong relationships with customers and contractors.
- Develops procedures and guidelines for communication facilities and systems. (Continuity book)
- Collaborate with other corporate business units to proactively identify communication system needs and develop plans to facilitate them.
- Design optical networks used to control gas and electrical control systems. Also includes supporting the communications necessary for power plant, corporate and energy delivery systems.
- Analyze fiber optic network infrastructure for percent utilization, future growth needs, and maintenance requirements.
- Design of new fiber optic infrastructure including route studies, analysis of projected loading on support structures, sag and tension of aerial cables, support hardware requirements, cable vibration and galloping, and general constructability.
- Design of tower and support structures including development of wind and ice loading cases, foundation design, existing and planned antennas and hardware.
- Design/Manage of communication shelters and communication rooms including equipment layouts, rack elevations, cable entrances, heat loads and cooling requirements, power and lighting, surge protection, grounding, and structured cabling requirements.
- Design of analog and digital radios to include Microwave, Multiple Address, Two-way voice, Mobile Data and Paging. Includes operating and obtaining licenses through the FCC.
- Provide subject matter expertise and training to junior engineers in diverse subject areas related to communications and general utility engineering practices including but not limited to microwave systems, opto-electronics, fiber optic and metallic outside plant cabling, inside plant structured cabling, structural engineering requirements, protective relaying, construction practices, and utility business practices.

Preferred Qualifications
- Broad knowledge of other related areas and how they influence operational/tactical aspects
- Experience with ESRI GIS software and Arc FM Designer software
- Experience with SAP and Work Manager software
- Engineering in Training (EIT) Certification

Minimum Education
Bachelors of Science degree in an engineering field from an ABET accredited four-year college or university or Demonstration of advanced skills or specialization applicable to the business area (Approval by Business Unit Executive Leadership, as related to the business need for Engineering Associate 2’s without their EIT)

Work is performed indoors & outdoors. Manual dexterity, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Use of computing equipment, telephone, & printer/copier. Ability to travel to and from business related events. After hours work may be required.
