Guided by the Cannabis Control Board and Cannabis Advisory Board, the OCM oversees licensing, regulations, and enforcement of cannabis policies in New York State. Role Description

This is a full-time hybrid role for an Assistant Counsel based in the New York City Metropolitan Area. The Assistant Counsel will provide legal counsel to support the agency’s regulatory and enforcement efforts within the cannabis industry. Responsibilities include drafting and reviewing legislation, regulations, and legal documents, offering legal advice on compliance and operational issues, and representing the agency in legal proceedings. The role also requires coordinating with stakeholders, conducting legal research, and ensuring policies align with New York State cannabis laws. While the position is based in New York City, some remote work is permissible.

Qualifications

• Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills
• Experience with drafting and reviewing legal documents, regulations, and government policies
• Knowledge of administrative law, regulatory frameworks, or enforcement disciplines, preferably in the cannabis, health, or related sectors
• Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex legal concepts clearly
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet tight deadlines
• Admittance to the New York State Bar with good standing
• Experience in public policy, government, or regulatory affairs is a plus
• Familiarity with New York State cannabis laws and regulations is preferred
